Patriots vs. Bengals

Tonight the Patriots completed their 16-0 season in impressive fashion against the Giants. (actually the game isn't quite over yet...but I am assuming).

It seems like everything goes really easily for them...I very rarely ever see Brady throw the ball to a covered receiver. It seems like there is always someone WIDE open. 3rd and 10? No Problem. 3rd and 16? No Problem.

My question is this...why does it always look so difficult for the Bengals. Every pass is contested. It never seems like anyone is wide open. Everything is just difficult.

Why? Is it because of the receivers/tight ends/backs? Is it because of Palmer? Is it because of the play calling/play design? Or is it all of it put together?

I tend to think it is play design. Since the Bengals refuse to design pass patterns like slants and 7 yard ins, defenses don't have to worry about them. They just have to worry about the deep out and TJ's 5 yard curl/hitch. It seems to me that the play designers aren't taking advantage of the full breadth of plays. They also refuse to throw the ball to the tight end. Tight Ends...even run blocking tight ends...can be a wonderful safety valve to gain 7 yards. I understand not all tight ends can be as good as Winslow or Gates...but I would think even Reggie Kelly could catch a couple balls a game. It would at least make the defense THINK about guarding them.

What do you think?

Bodies: The Exhibition

Hey everyone...hope you had a great Christmas! It sure was nice being on break.

Today, Mikah and I went to Bodies: The Exhibition up in Columbus. It was really cool. We were going to take some pictures, but they wouldn't let us.

It is an exhibition that shows the human body and its various processes. For example, there is a room dedicated to the digestive system, another to the circulatory system, etc... The weird thing is that they use real human bodies. Obviously they are dead...but they are real. They call them "specimen"...which makes it a little less creepy.

When you first look at the "specimen"...it's kind of weird because you know they were once real people. But after a while, you don't really think about it.

It's a really neat place...and I learned a lot just by being there. Osmosis.

Check and see if it is coming to a place near you!

Clash of The Choirs

Tonight, at the behest of Mikah who couldn't be there, I taped and watched Clash of The Choirs on NBC. Fantastic show! It was really neat to see all the choirs singing. I like when people sing well.

Anyway, there is a group from Cincinnati on there, led by Nick Lachey. They were really good and you should go vote for them.

Watch on Wednesday for some good old fashioned fun!

hmmm...this post tilts on the gay side, doesn't it?

End of Game Observations

The Bengals suck. Badly. I hope they lose next week against the Browns and then lose again against the Dolphins. We suck. Badly.

It is embarrasing when the announcers are calling our plays before they happen. I think that means you are too predictable.

Pretty nice attempt by Chad at the end...but not good enough.

You should not give up 10 yards when you KNOW a draw is coming. Everyone knew it was coming. blah.

At this point I'm just hoping for a good draft pick. Also at this point...I don't even know what to say about them anymore. I'd almost rather talk about the Mitchell Report.

1st Half Observations

Here are my first half observations about the Bengals game tonight:
  • Chris Henry has had 2 balls thrown to him, and they were a perfect microcosm of what I love and hate about him. He dropped a potential touchdown pass that hit him in the hands. Then he beat the deep safety on a beautiful TD catch. (although really...the safety blew that play because for some reason he started cheating towards RUDI JOHNSON who was lined out wide. This is why the 49ers suck)

  • Shaun Hill isn't that good. He has a terrible throwing motion that makes no sense. He was good last week against the Vikings (last in the league against the pass). He is good so far against the Bengals (near last in the league against the pass). Maybe he should play a team that knows how to play defense first.

  • I don't know what our Defense is good for really. We get zero pressure on the QB, forcing our rookie DB's to play really well. Then Dexter Jackson is there to not do anything productive. Get him off the field and put in White. DO IT.

  • Palmer looks way better out of the bad weather

  • De De Dorsey should get the ball 10-12 times per game. Not 2 per half.

  • Bryant Gumbel is terrible. Really bad. But Deion and Marshall Faulk are doing OK. They have at least both made legitimate points. But I wish Collinsworth was doing this. He is fantastic.

That's all I got for now.

Search Amazon from DIA!

Hey everyone...I've added a nice little feature on the right side of the blog for those of you who are online shoppers...or just like Amazon. You can search all of amazon through the link on the right. It will open up your search in a new page. Then you can buy whatever you want.

The added plus to using the search link from my page is that I get credit for whatever purchases you make, which helps this blog out. Once you do a search and it opens a window...you can search for anything and as long as you don't close out of that session, whatever you buy will be credited to DIA.

So if you are an amazon shopper...PLEASE use my link!

Thanks!

Pro-Penny or Anti-Penny?

There was a post on the Freakonomics blog today that got me thinking about the anti-penny/pro-penny debate. To be honest...I'm not sure where I stand on it quite yet. Let's look at it.

Anti-Penny
  • From what I understand, it costs 1.4 cents to mint a penny. So it costs more money to make money than that money is worth. That seems inefficient.

  • No one likes carrying pennies around.

  • Even collecting large numbers of them doesn't really make sense, because even if you take the time to collect 1000 pennies (which I imagine would take some time), you could only cash it in for $10. Not that getting $10 is a bad thing.

  • Some people are really bad at math and it's hard for them to make change or count out correct values that aren't rounded to the nearest 5 cents or 10 cents. True...they are probably stupid...but still.

Pro-Penny:
  • It's not that big of a deal to put your pennies in a jar and take the jar in to the bank every once in a while.

  • It makes for more precise pricing

  • Why not discontinue the nickel or the dime too?

  • What would we put in penny loafers? More importantly...who still wears penny loafers?

  • What would we call penny stocks? Really really inexpensive stocks? 1/5 of a nickel stocks? It just doesn't flow

What are your thoughts? Pro or Anti Penny?!?

Some Money Saving Websites

I just noticed that it has been a while since my last post. Sorry! I thought I would write a post about some interesting deals/ways to get deals.
  1. If you have pets, you probably need to get medicine for them. I went to 1800petmeds.com. This is a fantastic website that has pretty much any medicine you might need. We needed heartworm preventative medicine for our two dogs. A nice feature that this website has is a price matching function. So you can search for interceptor heartworm meds at any place...then tell 1-800-Petmeds...and they will match it and give you free shipping. Sweet deal! Plus, they put a dog biscuit in my box. That's cute.

  2. Retail Me Not is a really cool website that gathers information about coupon codes for pretty much every online vendor. If you use Firefox, you can add a plugin that tell you anytime you are on a site with a coupon code. It is quite helpful for those who do online shopping a lot...and for this time of the year.

  3. Filtersnow.com is a very nice website to buy filters. I recently had to get some humidifier filters, and Filters Now pretty much stocks any filter you might want, so it is useful for furnace filters as well. They will also match a competing price if you e-mail them about it.

Hopefully those can help you out...talk to you soon!
